About ZyloOralCare

The company, “ZyloOralCare” was created to provide oral health products, education, research, and information to help reduce the caries rate in young children.

Background:  Dental caries is one of the most prevalent and common world-wide diseases of children.

Method of addressing issue:  Tooth-brushing with fluoride toothpaste has traditionally been one of the most effective means of controlling dental caries.  However, a toothpaste with fluoride has its limitations in that it has to be expectorated.  This feature requires a site or facility to empty the mouth of the foam produced by the paste.  Also, the brush must be carried and protected from external contamination.  The storage of the brush becomes a problem, and bacteria can grow on the brush between brushings.

Target Population:  Everyone who needs improved oral hygiene immediately following a meal and especially children who have the greatest potential to develop good oral habits that can be maintained for a lifetime.

Means and opportunity:  Oral hygiene can be dramatically improved with the use of a disposable toothbrush that has had a toothpaste composed of xylitol applied to it before packaging.  By making available to children and adults a disposable prepasted toothbrush on which a xylitol paste is applied, that does not require spitting, significant improvement in the oral health of the population can be achieved. The toothpaste is composed of ingredients that are all food grade products.   Xylitol is a naturally occurring polyol that has the ability to reduce the organism Streptococcus Mutans, which is associated with dental caries.  Xylitol has the same sweetness factor as refined sugar, 50% fewer calories, and it is easily tolerated by diabetics.

Goals:  Capital is needed to pay for the equipment for mass production as well as for development of associated products such as lozenges, “gummy bears”, gums, etc.  Marketing will be widespread, and will include Schools, the Military, Nursing Homes, Hospitals and other Institutions.  A tremendous potential exists for commercial sales through businesses that cater to outdoor sports and activities with target customers such as campers, hunters, fishermen, and hikers. The ZyloOralCare logo will be recognized as a leader in the market for convenient oral care products.

Supportive Research:  Clinical research was carried out by the Professor and Senior Executive Associate Dean for Research Director Bioscience Research Center College of Dentistry and under the auspices the University of Tennessee's Institutional Review Board. The thirty day study was funded by Delta Dental of Tennesse.  This successful study demonstrated the effectiveness, feasibility and practibility of allowing children the opportunity of brushing after a meal.
